Overview of the plant components
With a capacity of 27.1 MW, the new power plant in the Tauerntal valley will not only contribute to climate protection, but also increase supply security in East Tyrol.
The Tauernbach-Gruben power plant is planned as a discharge power plant in the Tauerntal valley in East Tyrol with a water reservoir in the area of the Schildalm mountain pastures and a powerhouse directly below the pumping station of the transalpine oil pipeline.
Experience a virtual project flight through the Tauerntal valley and discover the most important locations of the Tauernbach-Gruben power plant.
Water intake
The water intake is located on the right side of the valley (in the direction of flow) in the area of the Schildalm alpine pastures and consists of a weir system with a fishbelly flap, inlet channel, sand trap and intake chamber.
Power plant
The powerhouse will be built directly below or south of the pumping station of the transalpine oil pipeline near Gruben.

The headrace tunnel
The headrace tunnel with a total length of around 8,500 metres is divided into two sections. The upper section has a length of approx. 2,400 metres and is constructed as a mined tunnel. The second section, about 6,100 m long, consists of an underground welded steel penstock with a diameter of 1.8 m and runs from the tunnel end to the powerhouse. The penstock is located in the Felbertauernstraße road at a length of about 700 m. Two crossings of the transalpine oil pipeline and one crossing of the Tauernbach stream are planned along the headrace tunnel.
