Our motivation

Ensuring supply security

Electricity supply security means that there is a balance of production and consumption at all times and that we become less and less dependent on foreign fossil energy imports. For over 100 years, TIWAG’s various power plants have been generating energy continuously but also at any time, at very short notice and flexibly. Our expansion plans amplify capabilities and in turn reliably secure the increased energy demand of our time.

Advancing the energy transition

It is one of the big challenges of our time to achieve supply security with renewable, zero-carbon sources of energy rather than with the fossil fuels and nuclear power of the past. But because wind and solar energy fluctuate heavily or are even unavailable at times, we need reliable balancing and backup energy. This energy is provided safely and securely by storage power stations and by pumped storage power stations in particular.

Our claim: Competence and care for a secure energy future.

Increasing efficiency

At TIWAG, we have been operating hydropower plants for 100 years and we are continuously striving to improve the efficiency of our plants. The expansions will not only feed additional renewable energy from the natural inflow into the electricity grid but will also continuously increase the efficiency of the existing plants.

Minimising interventions

The expansion of hydropower also means an intervention in nature. Important parts of the necessary infrastructure are already in place in our expansion projects. Existing roads and electricity lines can be used during the construction phase and in subsequent operation. This also means less impact on our natural environment.

The expansion projects contribute to the energy transition not just in Tyrol but also in Austria and in Europe.

Creating a balance

Several measures are required to compensate for the inevitable ecological interventions. For example, improvements to alpine pastures and forests are carried out, valuable wetland soils are added, and rewetting is executed. Existing stretches of water are being renaturalised and existing transverse structures on streams are being redesigned for the safe passage of fish.

Giving the Tyrolean economy a boost

Relying on local hydropower ultimately means investing in the domestic economy, creating jobs, and promoting regional development. Our aim is to help shape not only the sustainable supply of electricity in Tyrol but the sustainable future of Tyrol overall.
